weigh the puppies or kittens! |

Weight loss in a puppy - even a few grams in a day - serves as a warning that a problem is developing that could mean the death of that puppy. Contact your Veterinarian. If a pup becomes dehydrated from lack of fluid
intake, the weight loss is very noticeable as well as seeing very loose skin. A cleft palate, which makes sucking ineffective or impossible, results too in a noticeable weight loss. Contact your Veterinarian. If the litter has 'bully type' pups, smaller, weaker pups will be shoved aside and will lose weight. In a situation like this, a breeder must ensure that each pup has adequate and equal nursing time. Weigh puppies daily for the first 10 days, at leastWeighing each pup at the time of birth and recording the weight in a book daily will give you the assurance that all is well. Expect a puppy to lose 10% of it's birthweight after birth and then it will gain weight daily after the first 48 hours if it is being well-nourished by the dam. The daily weight gain will depend on the breed.
Toy dogs will gain less than a Retriever, but the gain for each will be steady and similar
each day for any breed. The important words are "similar and steady". |
