Overview of Import/Export regulations
for transportation of chilled semen.




Canadian Consumers

Agriculture Canada and Canada Customs do not require certificates or documentation certificates for chilled semen imported from the United States into Canada.

Documentation and import licenses are required for chilled semen from any other country when imported in to Canada. You should contact your local Agriculture Canada for specific information and obtain the necessary certificates well in advance of the planned shipment.





American Consumers


As of October, 2000, American residents can import Canadian semen with no documentation required for the Department of Agriculture or Customs.

The new regulation reads: AGENCY: Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, USDA. ACTION: Final rule.

SUMMARY: We are amending our regulations concerning the importation of animal semen by eliminating importation requirements for all canine semen from anywhere in the world and for equine semen from Canada.

We believe these changes are warranted because canine semen and equine semen from Canada pose no threat of introducing diseases to U.S. livestock. This action will reduce regulatory requirements for the importation of semen while continuing to protect the health of U.S. livestock.

We are also requiring that other animal semen be imported only in shipping containers that bear the official government seal of the national veterinary service of the region of origin.




International Consumers


If you wish to import chilled semen from Canada or the United States, you must contact your national department of Agriculture and Customs/Immigration for the requirements to do this.
