What Should I Know about Using Chilled Semen and the KCS Box? | **KCS** = Kooled Canine Semen.
The first thing you should do is contact the owner of the stud dog, to make sure that:
| 1. This is an acceptable way for you to access the selected male. |
| 2. His/her veterinarian can collect the dog when you need the semen. |
| 3. What the veterinarian's charge will be for this service. (You will be responsible for this bill.) |
| 4. Order your PREMATE kit from Pinnacle Pet Supply
|
These 4 things should be done well in advance of the expected heat cycle, so that you will have time to make other
arrangements if necessary.
The Canadian Kennel Club accepts registrations for litters born by artificially inseminated chilled semen as does the AKC.
If you are asked to ship your male's semen to another country other than the USA, the bitch owner must check the regulations for registration and importation in that country and take all the necessary steps.
The Canadian Kennel Club does not require Veterinarian signatures for either the collection or the insemination, but it is to your advantage to have a veterinarian examine the collection prior to shipping and on arrival to ensure that you are getting a satisfactory semen supply!
The AKC does require veterinary signatures.
It makes no sense to plan on shipping semen for your bitch if you have no idea what the quality of the dog's semen is.
A good stud dog owner will have his dog's semen checked under a microscope, by a veterinarian on a regular basis, to make
sure the count and the motility is satisfactory prior to shipping or mating. You should ask for a copy of the report.
Canadian breeders will purchase their supplies from Pinnacle Pet Supply -

U.S breeders will purchase their supplies from Camelot Farms for use within the United States.
Agriculture Canada and Canada Customs no longer requires fees or signed documents for semen imported into Canada from the USA. The USFDA as well has no requirements for semen importation from Canada into the USA.
If you want to bring semen from another country, check wih your local Canadian Department of Agriculture for import requirements, and request the appropriate import document. There is a nominal fee for this import application - it is less than $50.00.
Fedex does a great job of transporting the KCS box containing the chilled semen within Canada, to the USA and overseas.
Fedex does require a Commercial Invoice and a Proforma document to be completed to accompany the waybill for transport to or from the USA. I provide these blank documents when I ship the KCS box to you.
Next, you will send, or have Pinnacle Pet Supply send the KCS box and the frozen vial of Insemin-aid to the stud dog
owner when your bitch has begun her heat cycle.
This is sent by Federal Express using their overnight service. Approximately 4 lb. of dry ice will be added to the shipper
box to keep the Insemin-aid frozen.
You will ensure that your bitch's immunizations are up-to-date, and have the Brucellosis test done. You obviously will have
been feeding her in the best possible way you know of, to ensure strong healthy puppies.
Prior to mating you should have a culture and sensitivity test (a C & S) of her cervical area. It will take more than 48 hours to get the results.
You will give her the appropriate antibiotics, some of which are safe to use even well into the pregnancy if advised to do so by your veterinarian.
Many bitches harbor infection with no visible external signs, but these infections, if left untreated, often interfere with
conception, possibly cause absorption of the whelps, and may cause fading puppies after birth. Many breeders feel that doing a C & S
is an unnecessary step, but why risk all the planning and expense by not inseminating into a clean, healthy environment?
I received a bitch here who had a history of "misses" for my stud. I had the C & S done immediately and when the report was received, she did indeed have an infection and was put on antibiotics.
The interesting feature of this was that, although she was not ready for mating ( I was "Premating" her,) I still collected the chosen sire and inseminated the bitch. I retrieved semen from the vagina 15 minutes later and it was DEAD! After 4 days of the antibiotic, I finally retrieved live sperm, and when she ovulated, according to the Premate test, I again inseminated her, and she went on to have 10 healthy puppies!
By following all these preparatory steps, we have increased our conception rate here at Aisling Kennel to 100%, when the average conception rate is less than 63% (NGA statistics)
You should order the PREMATE Kit from Pinnacle Pet Supply in advance, and begin testing your bitch in the early part of the
heat, and notify the stud dog owners that she has come into heat.
When the Premate test results indicate that ovulation has occurred, you simply call the stud dog owner to have the dog
collected (ejaculated) that day, have Federal Express pick up and ship the KCS carton and semen, and you will receive it the next day.
You will take your bitch and the KCS box containing the semen in the Inseminaid vial to your veterinarian and have her inseminated.
You can "split" the collection, and reserve half to do another insemination in 24-48 hours, if you wish. This is dependent on the quality and quantity of the semen, and the breed of dog being inseminated. I will be happy to advise you on this "splitting" procedure, and I do provide written instructions.
Many breeders are quite capable of doing the insemination themselves, but a veterinarian is a valuable ally!
Mark your calendar for 63 days hence, and wait for that wonderful litter of puppies.
