Bitches DO NOT ovulate on the same day each heat! I bred the same bitch in 3 successive years, where she ovulated on Day 6, Day 10, and Day 14, as determined by the PREMATE TEST. She produced good-sized litters each year !!! Many bitches are harbouring a minor infection, which can prevent conception !! The infection is not visible to the naked eye. The onset of heat causes a heavier growth of the bacteria. We recommend that you have your Veterinarian do a culture and sensitivity test done on her at the very start of the heat cycle and give her the appropriate antibiotic to clear up the infection. It will take at least 3 days to get a report back from the lab, so do the test right at the onset of the heat cycle. There are antibiotics that can be used safely at this time, and throughout the pregnancy.. Many bitches when ovulating, do not seem to put out the right scent to activate the male !!! If we wait for the male dog to tell us when we should mate her, we may have missed ovulation. I have seen males wait until a week after ovulation, before attempting to breed the bitch. Artificial insemination, when the PREMATE TEST tells us is the optimum time for breeding, results in the litter being conceived -- not the male's instinct !!! The male dog's semen quality is vastly improved if he has been "cleaned out" (ejaculated) a week prior to mating your bitch. If he shows any sign of a penile discharge, he too, should be cultured and treated, so that he does not transmit an infection to the bitch during a natural or artificial mating. He should also be checked to determine the numbers, quality and motility of his semen. Artificial Insemination prevents or eliminates many of the "social" problems, dangers and stress associated with natural mating, and provides as good a litter of puppies as a natural coupling does. It does not "destroy" the natural mating instinct. Agriculture Canada and Canada Customs, FDA and USDA no longer require import certificates, fees and inspection for semen coming into Canada or the United States from either of these two countries!!! ![]() ![]() The Kooled Semen System, designed by Camelot Farms, and available through Pinnacle Pet Supply, now makes breeding (using chilled semen)to that special dog in Canada, the United States, or worldwide a very simple procedure, when combined with the Premate Testing. Check it out on the menu.
