Marilyn & Bob Brotherton live in Manitoba and have been quietly involved with Kerry Blue Terriers since 1975, breeding under the Prefix of "Aisling Permanent Registered Kennel".

Aisling (pronounced ashling) is an Irish word meaning hopes, dreams and ambition

They rarely advertise or brag about their accomplishments with their Kerries, but here are some of the facts:

50 Aisling dogs have attained championship status to date, as well as many more champions from registered kennels who carry Aisling bloodlines in their dogs through judicious breeding, including well-known Ch. Kerrageen's Hotspur.
We have 11 CKC certificates in our home for 6 different Aisling Kerries who placed at or in the top Kerry Blue terrier rankings in Canada from 1982-1988, often competing against each other.
In addition to the conformation ring, the Aisling dogs have worked in the Obedience ring, the Scent Hurdle Racing Course, and other field work activities.
Ch. Aisling's Merry O'Rourke ROM HIC was the first Kerry Blue Terrier in Canada to obtain a Sheep-Herding Instinct Certificate. (H.I.C.)
Aisling Kerries have brought home ribbons for Best in Show, Best Brace in Show, Best in Specialty Show, Best Puppy in Show, Best Veteran in Specialty, Best Stud Dog in Specialty and High in Trial.
They have always groomed and handled their own dogs & have attended several Kerry Blue Terrier Specialties in the USA from coast to coast and in Canada.

Marilyn's main interest however has been in the breeding area with serious attention to genetic and structural aspects of the Kerry Blue Terrier and has maintained a meticulous record for all the dogs produced. This resource has been used by breeders and veterinarians alike as an aid to solving or understanding some situations that are of concern to them.

Marilyn & Bob have bred 35 Aisling litters which have produced 142 puppy dogs
Of the 46 Aisling Canadian Champions, only 20 have been used in their breeding program.
Of the 20 used in the breeding program, 9 have been named to the "Register of Merit" status.
Marilyn began studying genetics and pedigrees in 1976 prior to mating their foundation bitch, and has attended several genetic seminars over the years supplemented with reading, practical experience and knowledgeable mentors. They determined that it was imperative to breed as carefully as possible.

This determination to breed only from genetically healthy & 'true to the standard' dogs has resulted in many "handsome or pretty or even top-winning" of their champion dogs not being used for breeding purposes.

Each Aisling proposed mating is subjected to pedigree scrutiny for genetic health and for calculation of the inbreeding co-efficient to predict as far as possible which background dogs will most likely make the biggest contribution to the gene pool of the potential puppy.

Each proposed breeding dog has been subjected to health screening for known breed defects.

They have OFA certified 42 of the 50 champions produced.
Marilyn and Bob are determined to leave the Aisling Kerry Blue Terrier blood line as genetically healthy as possible for future generations of breeders to carry on with.

We are aware that what we do to-day in a breeding program will impact the Kerry Blue Terrier Breed forever in the future.
